I'm here to listen

Hi I'm Joe Cotter, I am a graduate of the Flatstone Institutes humanistic and integrative psychotherapy training. I offer low cost counselling/ psychotherapy in Cork city. I previously qualified as a Social Worker, holding a Masters in Social Work from UCC. I have over ten years of experience volunteering with the Samaritans. And currently I am also working as a counsellor with Pieta House, gaining experience and insight from the most vulnerable of people

How I can help

Humanistic and integrative psychotherapy

What is humanistic and integrative psychotherapy?

'Humanistic' essentially means person-centred. Your experience of your life is what is real, and it is the driving force of each session. It’s the raw material for the work that we will do together.

'Integrative' refers to the various methods that we might use in working together. In other words, we are not limited to one particular way of working. As we go we might discover feelings that are easier for you to express through drawing or writing or movement. We can be receptive to whatever arises.

Counselling/psychotherapy is a collaborative effort between therapist and client. You may be experiencing powerful feelings of anxiety, fear, loneliness, regret, anger or sadness. These are all natural aspects of our emotional life. But they can also be too much to deal with alone at times. We can sit together and try to understand those parts of you.

Lonliness lept in the mirrors, all week I kept them covered like cages. Then I thought of a better thing.

What to Expect & Benefits

What to expect?

It's normal for people to be apprehensive about attending a session, especially if it's your first time. I understand from personal experience what it’s like to be the client entering into the world of ‘therapy’. From the moment you arrive, you will be welcomed into a secure authentic space.

In this confidential space, you are free to express whatever you may be feeling. My role as the therapist is to be a witness to your unique story, and to go on a journey with you, the client, through that story.

The sessions are one hour long and can be booked for a time that best suits you. They take place in a private room located in Cork city centre (at the bottom of St Patrick’s Hill).

Possible benefits for you

Being met and listened to can help us to develop clear personal insights and work through feelings of inner conflict. I want to help you to enrich your relationships with others and promote beneficial change in your life. Ultimately, the service I provide is about empowerment, and helping people to live in a more satisfying and resourceful way.
